About this Presentation

This masterclass introduces the Theory of Constraints view of Production and Operations Management by focusing on the principles that govern flow, workload, priorities, capacity, and ongoing improvement. Humberto R. Baptista explains why operations should be managed as one flow of work, why congestion and excess WIP damage performance, and how TOC tools such as buffer management, CCR load control, and POOGI help organizations create better priorities, shorter lead times, and more reliable due dates. The result is a practical introduction to managing operations not through local efficiencies, but through focus, flow, and systematic improvement.

What Will You Learn

To help you get the most value from this session, we’ve highlighted a few key points. These takeaways capture the main ideas and practical insights from the presentation, making it easier for you to review, reflect, and apply what you’ve learned.

Plane
This masterclass reframes operations management around one central TOC idea: flow is the main consideration, not local efficiency, cost absorption, or keeping every resource busy.
A major insight is that the presentation pushes attendees to think differently about the constraint in operations. While many constraints can exist, Humberto argues that demand is the ultimate constraint, and operations must be managed to protect and improve the flow of goal units through the system.
The session gives practical guidance on how to improve flow by reducing congestion and work in process. It introduces the U-curve, the rule of thumb to cut release lead time in half when WIP is not strictly controlled, and the operational benefits of a low-WIP environment, including shorter lead times, less stress, better visibility, and better quality.
It also shows how TOC translates into day-to-day control through buffer management, CCR management, reliable due dates, and POOGI. Rather than treating improvement as occasional projects, the presentation frames operations excellence as a repeatable process of monitoring flow disruptions, prioritizing correctly, and acting on the most impactful sources of delay.
