About this Presentation

Humberto R. Baptista presents an end-to-end view of TOC buffers and Buffer Management, from their purpose and design through execution, health, resizing, and the Process of Ongoing Improvement. He begins by distinguishing TOC buffers from ordinary stockpiles or generic safety margins. A TOC buffer explicitly identifies and quantifies protection against variability, covers a defined range of the flow, is tied to a goal-aligned protected point, and is used to guide execution. The buffer template asks what is protected, how the protection works, and what range is covered. The session then traces Buffer Management from early Drum-Buffer-Rope "holes" and zones to the color system used to guide execution. Colors create wide, non-negotiable priority groups while still allowing resources to sequence freely within each group. Production, stock, and project examples show how buffer consumption, status, and color are calculated and translated into action. Buffer linkages are also addressed, including inherited priorities across departments and Planned Load as a capacity buffer for capacity-constrained resources in simplified DBR. The final section covers buffer health and resizing. Dynamic Buffer Management responds to accumulated color imbalance, such as too much red/black or too much green, and is especially important in Distribution and Retail. Buffer penetration data can also support POOGI by showing where work gets stuck and what consumes protection most, provided signals close to a recent buffer-size change are treated carefully. The full picture links buffering, execution priorities, buffer health, and continuous improvement into one management system.

What Will You Learn

To help you get the most value from this session, we’ve highlighted a few key points. These takeaways capture the main ideas and practical insights from the presentation, making it easier for you to review, reflect, and apply what you’ve learned.

Plane
How TOC buffers differ from ordinary stockpiles: they explicitly protect a goal-aligned point from variability across a defined range and are designed for execution management.
How Buffer Management turns buffer status into clear, coarse priority groups that guide sequencing and create a common language for the entire flow.
How to understand consumption, status, color, and linkages across production, stock, project, and capacity buffers, including Planned Load.
How buffer statistics, Dynamic Buffer Management, and penetration data can reveal imbalance, support resizing, and guide the Process of Ongoing Improvement.
