About this Presentation

This presentation will open by providing some context into the program and environment within which the CCPM/TOC methodologies have been applied within military aircraft maintenance in the UK. The process taken to transfer best practice from BAE Systems Australia into the Hawk UK program will then be covered, as well as briefly touching on the pilot approach followed to trial the efficacy of the CCPM approach in the UK. The presentation will then expand in detail on the subsequent ongoing full-scale implementation, benefits seen to date, barriers to implementation, and lessons learned. Topics covered as part of describing the full implementation include the assessment of existing program measures and policies and the behaviors they engendered, improvement of the definition of work content to minimize variation, critical chain scheduling and subsequent management of the execution of the plan, implementation of full kit methodologies, and application of TOC approaches to pipelining and continuous improvement. The presentation will also cover our many learnings on how to deploy CCPM effectively, how to establish a team, challenge cultural norms, and overcome perceived barriers to implementation.

What Will You Learn

To help you get the most value from this session, we’ve highlighted a few key points. These takeaways capture the main ideas and practical insights from the presentation, making it easier for you to review, reflect, and apply what you’ve learned.

Plane
Learn how Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) was adapted to the fast jet maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) environment in the UK to improve planning, scheduling, and execution in a complex military aircraft program.
Understand why traditional measures and behaviors hindered maintenance flow and how redefining work content and execution strategies reduced variation and improved reliability.
See how techniques such as critical chain scheduling, full-kit methodologies, and buffer management supported clearer priorities, better visibility, and more predictable hangar throughput.
Gain insight into practical implementation lessons, including cultural change, team formation, and overcoming barriers to CCPM adoption in aerospace maintenance operations.

Tom Callender is an accomplished engineering graduate with a decade of experience within the military aircraft maintenance & sustainment industry with BAE Systems the multi-national defence, security and aerospace company. With experience in service design, business development and change management, Tom currently serves as a Contract Delivery Manager overseeing maintenance of the Royal Air Force’s Hawk fleet of fast jet training aircraft, where he is responsible for ensuring optimal service delivery from the maintenance organisation in a cost effective manner to the end customer. Tom has a curiosity for learning about new developments within the delivery of aircraft maintenance, and a keen interest in behavioural psychology and its relationship with culture. As such, Tom has been acting as the CCPM lead on the Hawk program for the last 18 months.
