About this Presentation

Dr. Efrat Goldratt-Ashlag focuses on why knowing the Rules of Flow is not enough for successful implementation. She begins with a familiar reinforcing cycle: projects or production take longer than estimated, creating pressure to finish on time, start work earlier, open more projects, and multitask - actions that in turn further damage flow. In production, improving the situation may require identifying the constraint, choking release, changing efficiency measurements, and applying the rules of flow. In projects, the deck highlights WIP control, triage, synchronization, standardization, full kit, and identifying the constraint. But Goldratt-Ashlag challenges the idea that implementation can be reduced to a finite rule list or a perfectly sized buffer. Her central warning is to stop imposing certainty on uncertainty. The deeper capability is intuition for flow: the ability to understand what the system needs in context without relying only on mechanical application of rules. The presentation treats intuition as something that can grow through books, games, and repeated practice. That creates a practical implementation dilemma. Organizations want fast results to earn buy-in, while building people's intuition requires enough time to practice, explain, reflect, and learn. A case involving an electrical failure in an accounting office makes the distinction concrete. The office manager groups several electrical problems together to reduce the cost of an evening electrician, but the original blocked office remains unable to work for two weeks. The example introduces coupling and decoupling: grouping activities together or separating them can each be the right rule of flow depending on the system. Either can also become a local-optimum decision when applied without regard to global flow. The session therefore reframes the "secret" of implementation: build people's intuition to flow so they can distinguish local efficiency from global performance and make context-sensitive decisions under uncertainty, rather than simply following a fixed set of rules.

What Will You Learn

To help you get the most value from this session, we’ve highlighted a few key points. These takeaways capture the main ideas and practical insights from the presentation, making it easier for you to review, reflect, and apply what you’ve learned.

Plane
How early starts, too much WIP, multitasking, and pressure to finish can reinforce one another and make both project and production flow worse.
Why Rules of Flow implementation cannot be reduced to a rigid checklist or a search for perfect certainty in buffers and rules; managers must be able to respond intelligently to uncertainty.
How intuition for flow can be developed through explanation, games, and repeated practice - and why this learning can conflict with the pressure to produce fast results for buy-in.
How coupling and decoupling illustrate the difference between local and global optimization: either approach can improve or damage flow depending on the system context and the effect on the whole.
