European TOCICO Regional Conference

The First European TOCICO Regional Conference was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from October 15–17, 2009. The event featured TOC practitioners, consultants, and business leaders sharing practical applications of the Theory of Constraints across healthcare, project management, supply chain, IT, manufacturing, and organizational change.

Presentations highlighted real-world case studies, Critical Chain Project Management, Strategy & Tactics Trees, TOC Thinking Processes, supply chain synchronization, and TOC’s integration with Lean and Agile. The conference emphasized practical ways organizations used TOC to improve flow, focus, due-date performance, inventory, patient care, and sustainable business results.

  • Strategy & tactics for managing multi-projects

    Course

Details history of critical chain (CC), strategy and tactics (S&T) tree, and steps for starting a theory of constraints project management. Highlights S&T for holistic CC implementation (build, capitalize, sustain) and case studies.

  • Using TOC to deliver IT projects on time, all the time

    Course

After the 2001 recession, Dutch IT company Caesar adopted Eli Goldratt's Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) and Problem Driven Scope Management (PDSM) in 2004, leading to over 95% due date performance.

  • The foundation of the theory of constraints: What is theory of constraints?

    Course

Goldratt discusses the Theory of Constraints (TOC), its evolution from throughput accounting (1981) to critical chain (1986), the five focusing steps (1987), and the thinking processes (TP) (1989-1992) for identifying core problems.

  • Reaching the goal

    Course

Dr. Goldratt explores how goals and success are defined/measured in for-profit vs. for-purpose organizations. He notes that objectives can form a "circle of identicals" and warns that quantified measures often overshadow non-quantified ones.

  • Introduction presentation for the supply chain track with the relevant S&T tree

    Course

A 2-min video addresses supply chain constraints and common company approaches. Highlighted subjects related to the S&T tree include aggregation, order lead time, retailer-supplier conflict, ROI calculation, and the financial crisis.

  • Theory of constraints: Proven beyond doubt in reality

    Course

Alex Knight applied Dr. Goldratt's TOC in healthcare. Issues: process delays for longest-stay patients, and the cost/Throughput dilemma. Breakthroughs need consensus, operational, financial, market, and sustainability efforts.

  • Implementation of CCPM at Nationale Nederlanden - Group Life: Beating the law of diminishing returns

    Course

Successful CCPM in IT needs senior management support, strong governance, and employee behavioral change. Priority setting, starting at the top, is essential, focusing on governance and individual change for success.

  • Managing stocks in low yield environments

    Course

Presentation on managing make-to-availability stocks in low-yield V-plants (no control over outputs). Features a case study on quality levels and modeling best practices for inventory and availability.

  • New technology and new product value assessment

    Course

Rudolf Burkhard's presentation for Eli Schragenheim evaluates new technology using Dr. Eli Goldratt’s six questions. Key insights: new technology must eliminate a barrier, and economic worth requires bypassing existing workarounds.

  • Using critical chain project management to drive innovation in a general hospital

    Course

Maasstad Ziekenhuis, a 600-bed hospital, faced project management issues with 180 projects. Implementing CCPM led to a 40% reduction in concurrent projects, average lead time dropping from >1 year to <8 months, and >90% finished on time.

  • We've implemented TOC: Now what?

    Course

The company implemented TOC to survive as a supplier to Ikea and Renault/VW. Using TOC-based software and ERP integration, they improved performance, paying debt/suppliers on time, boosting sales by 80%, and avoiding elimination by Ikea.

  • Against the odds: TOC in a private equity world

    Course

TOC enabled the successful acquisition and integration of an Ikea supplier, improving DDP, customer satisfaction (retaining Ikea), increasing capacity, decreasing lead times, inventory, and WC, freeing cash flow, and increasing ROI.

  • Dealing with change in hospitals quickly and efficiently by means of horizontal leadership and TOC

    Course

Dutch hospitals face balancing compassionate care and efficiency due to rising demand & staff shortages. The solution is 'the process concept' & horizontal leadership. A Rotterdam hospital tested these principles using TOC from 2006-2009.

  • Supply chain synchronization

    Course

Agentrics, organized by 23 large retailers to counteract Wal-Mart pre-2000, offers a supply chain synchronization platform, linking above individual ERPs for suppliers, distributors, and retailers to satisfy the end user.
