2010 TOCICO International Conference

The TOCICO 8th Annual Worldwide Gathering of TOC Professionals, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from June 19–22, 2010, brought together Theory of Constraints practitioners, consultants, researchers, and business leaders to explore the latest advances in TOC applications and implementation.

Conference sessions covered supply chain and replenishment, Critical Chain Project Management, Strategy & Tactics Trees, healthcare, education, retail, manufacturing, sales, organizational transformation, and public-sector applications. Through case studies, practical workshops, and presentations by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt and other TOC leaders, attendees shared insights on achieving sustainable growth, improving organizational performance, and creating decisive competitive advantages through focused management and continuous improvement.

  • How did a Brazilian company improve its results, strategies and processes by managing the pull x push dilemma

    Course

Big Frango, a $350M company processing 400K chickens daily, increased sales and lowered inventory by implementing VMROI (vendor managed ROI) strategies, addressing the supplier/retailer conflict over inventory/sales.

  • Viable Vision learnings

    Course

Viable Vision project insights offer a competitive edge through a win:win:win approach. Lessons cover MTO/MTA and PPC, emphasizing a test launch to validate client needs, reactions, and analyze results for new insights and improved lead times.

  • Retail TOC - Myths and truths

    Course

The presentation discusses the TOC solution for retailers, questioning if the existing S&T depth is sufficient. It explores concepts and implementation results from a large retailer to share the required logic for success.

  • Case study: Finding and testing a solution to shortages and surpluses within book publishing

    Course

The presentation details a Theory of Constraints (TOC) process to identify and resolve surpluses and shortages in the book publishing supply chain. This generic solution is also viable for consumer goods supply chains.

  • Study project: harmony: How the theory of constraints enhances learning through singing of pop songs in the classroom

    Course

Teachers can engage children through their senses and thinking skills. Accelerated learning is achieved by integrating pop songs with the theory of constraints, making school enjoyable for students.

  • Concluding keynote presentation: Checking reality for changing patterns

    Course

Adapting to change requires updating old behaviors. Goldratt outlines 6 environment changes impacting patterns, including speed of results, global practice, and market shifts. Key principle: Maintain humility and trust in people.

  • TOC for start ups

    Course

Startup growth rests on technology. Successful startups attract external money and eventually stop losing money, often with later-generation products. Technology must diminish client limitations, requiring clients to change their mode of operation.

  • Complex systems, TOC, and the search for inherent simplicity

    Course

The Cynefin Model helps match improvement methods (like Lean, Six Sigma, TOC) to appropriate domains. It shows why TOC is better for complex systems and how its inherent simplicity leads to breakthrough solutions using design and scientific methods.

  • Injecting TOC with lean / six sigma into process improvement in healthcare

    Course

A new approach combines TOC, lean, and six sigma for continuous process improvement in healthcare. Strategies to overcome resistance and examples from interventional radiology, advanced cancer treatments, and lab turnaround times are shared.

  • It's not only a buy-In issue: Transforming an organization

    Course

The session focuses on identifying who needs buy-in, information, or training, and the timing of buy-in, while also addressing the need to realign behavioral patterns to overcome old habits after buy-in and training.

  • Managing patient flow using time buffers

    Course

Common control functions from SDBR and CCPM were successfully applied to managing patient flow in health and social care. The presentation details this approach, its limitations, and explains why kanban control failed in this context.

  • The black hole

    Course

This presentation proves and simulates a new replenishment concept. It rapidly adjusts stock holding (buffers) via a feedback loop, using thinking processes diagrams and live simulation runs.

  • Doubling profits in 2 years (April 2008-March 2010) during an economic downturn

    Course

Godrej Locks Division doubled profits, increasing cash flow over 100%, and reducing inventory by 40% by reorganizing its business, improving performance, delivering competitive offers, and exploiting supply chain constraints.

  • Tata Refractories Ltd - Early gains through TOC implementation

    Course

Implementation of TOC led to a win:win:win situation, harmony, and no conflict. Financial and operational gains include sales increases (15% Dolomite, 14% High Alumina, 3% FCP), 24% throughput, and OIF at 85% from 25%.

  • Removing engines of disharmony: A set of learnings to managing the market

    Course

Apparel manufacturer with poor due date performance, short product life, and high new orders overcame sales oscillations using S-DBR, S&T tree logic, and a day-by-day execution system in their Theory of Constraints (TOC) journey.

  • How marketing drove operational change in a restaurant

    Course

The organization transformed from a traditional restaurant to a highly efficient one, showing big improvements in quality and customer service. It may be the only chain in Mexico offering a Mafia offer on time and quality.

  • The revised focusing steps of TOC: A value creation approach

    Course

The presentation revises the TOC's five focusing steps into seven. The two new steps added are to: Identify the organization's goal and develop a performance measurement system to support that goal.

  • The strategies & tactics for selling a decisive competitive edge

    Course

The main benefits of Theory of Constraints (TOC) come from increased sales. This presentation addresses how to increase sales using examples from Viable Vision (VV) implementations and specific steps from strategy and tactics (S&T) trees.

  • Managing high touch time environments in SDBR

    Course

Insights on managing manufacturing work orders with high touch time (over 20% of lead time) for MTO/MTS. It addresses the gray area between production and project management solutions, using a job shop example.

  • Quantifying throughput in public sector organizations

    Course

A method for measuring throughput in non-profits uses surveys to quantify customer satisfaction, similar to money in for-profit firms. This enables focused improvement decisions and expands the Theory of Constraints (TOC) knowledge base.

  • Beyond MRP: ASR - Transforming parts and materials availability for ERP, lean and TOC implementations

    Course

ASR is a materials synchronization solution that provides material/component availability tied to consumption, maintains stock/BOM visibility, supports pull-based systems (e.g., lean, DBR), and can improve performance in traditional MRP environments.

  • The theory of constraints as applied to solid waste management in four cities in Africa - A case study

    Course

TOC is applied to improve African city solid waste management by focusing on an inverse distribution system, better route planning, correct vehicle sizing, optimizing collection frequency, and resolving low vehicle utilization.
